Why Your English Writing Skills Are Not Improving in spite of writing a Lot

In the past, I was writing a lot in English, but I felt that my English writing skills weren’t improving very much. After some thinking, I was able to make a change and started to improve my writing level.  I achieved that by changing the way I was using the spellchecker on my word processor.

In the past, when writing in English on my computer, I used to write as the spellchecker corrected my spelling and grammatical errors. My mistakes were corrected while writing without any thinking on my part. I quickly corrected every mistake without analysing my mistakes. As a result, there was little improvement, if any, in my English writing skills.

Most of the people work like this. It’s easy and allows you to go faster when writing something. But on the other hand, it doesn’t help and even damages your English writing skill progression.

Then, a change has to be made.

What Do You Have to Do to Improve Your Writing Skills?

Whenever you have to write something for your job,  studies or personal stuff, you can make the most of that opportunity by improving your English writing skills.
From now on, whenever you open your word processor, you always have to:

Switch your spellchecker OFF.

Write.

Correct as many errors (spelling or grammatical) as possible by yourself.

Switch your spellchecker ON.

Check the mistakes you didn’t find on your own (and your spellchecker did).

At first, it will take more time, but as a reward, you will improve your writing skills.

You don’t really want to write your emails fifty-fifty with your spellchecker.
You want to write 90% of your emails and let your spellchecker help you with the remaining 10%, which will give you advice about those errors you didn’t find.

If you use that strategy, your English writing skills will reach the next level!
